24fig battalions, basing
How do you base your french 24 fig battalion of six companies? Six bases of four figs, two eights plus elite coys on two fours? Four six fig bases? 36 anf 30 fig battalions are easy, six bases of six figs, five figs on each base for 30 fig units. What if I use the same large bases for 24's so the unit has the same foot print as a 30/36 fig battalion, but just four figs on each base? Would it be plausible to do this, (drawing casualties from the third rank etc). I'm loosing sleep because of this you know  My 24's are six bases of four figs. Just feels like there is a better way to do it.

I do what you do and have six bases of 4 figs. Looks right to me.

I also base mine four to a base. I prefer six smaller bases to four larger ones. Also, it keeps each of my battalions in the right proportion to one another. This shot gives you a general idea of how they look together. To the left bottom in line is a 30 man battalion. In the rear is a 24 man battalion in column. <>>

2x8 figures and 2x4 figures here.

I do mine in 2 x 8, and 2 x 4 for each of the elite companies. Gives me enough flexibility, and I like the look of 8 figure bases.

This is something that i've been thinking about a bit and can never make my mind up so have been painting the 30 and 36 figure battalions fisrt! 6 bases of 4 has the adavantage that you can have one base per company and detach the voltiguers if you wish. The down side for me is that using the 30mm frontage and 40mm depth, the column is excessivly deep compared to the frontage and doesn't look quite right. In reality I believe it would be more like equal frontage to depth. Have been toying with the idea of using 4 bases of 6 figures, looks better when in column but has the disadvantage that you cannot have equal numbers in each company or easily detach the voltigeurs.

It is a bit of a quandary for me too. I have 36 and 24 figure French battalions with 6 figures to a base for the former and 4 figures to a base for the latter. I would like to have 30 figure units but balk at the idea of 5 figures to a base. Perhaps I'll base them as I do with the British 30 figure units, 6 figures to a base for the centre companies and two bases of three figures each for flank companies. Schultz

The 5 figure bases don't look too bad to me. I tend you use the officers and NCO's as one of the figures and a mounted officer can fill one of the 'spare' slots too

I managed to fit my infantry on a 15x15mm space so my 4 fig companies are 30x30mm, a column of attack is 6x9cm, looks ok (see http://generaldebrigade.13.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=3825 ) My 30 fig battlions are for now made up of fours and every other company is sixes, so a column is five figs wide. David, nice figures in your pics, your 3cm depth bases do look a lot better for a column.
