AWI forum
Gentlemen,
Does anybody know of a general AWI Wargames forum?
I wish to ask some questions about rules ideas, other than British Grenadier, for this period and I do not think it is correct to do so on a forum paid for by a particular publisher.
If this post contravenes forum rules, Mr. Moderator please delete it and accept my sincere apologies.
If not, thanks in advance,
DaveB.
You could try this site
forumer.com/" target="_blank">http://ilovewargameing.21.
forumer.com/ they pretty much cover all wargaming, but of course nowhere near as friendly and helpfull as this one. And of course one should ask why you are thinking of different rules in the first place. Hope this helps
Dave,
we get plenty of posts here from people just seeking information or wanting to share stuff about wargaming the AWI period. No need for it to be specifically about 'British Grenadier !'

... and, by hanging out here, you get to tap the limitless fountain of knowledge of all things oscure (but useful) and AWI related that is Ronan the Librarian

.......... There is a Yahoo group: Revlist. It is primarily a reenacter centered group, but some of the discussions are interesting from time to time. Just curious Dave, but what do you find wrong with BG!? Or rather what can we do to encourage you to play it?

Mikeb et al,
I find nothing wrong with BG and I did not intend any criticism of the rules. In fact I have never tried them and know nothing about them.
I was just looking for opinions on how to adopt another set of 18th. Century rules to the AWI. I have found a set of rules for 18th. Century wars that I quite like and was looking for ways to recreate the use of "light infantry" type troops and other elements that did not exist in the period for which the other set of rules is intended.

Apart from the Yahoo! Revlist (which I can confirm is overwhelmingly re-enactment oriented), the other AWI wargaming forums I've come across are also rule-specific (eg Fire & Steel, Disperse Ye Damn'd Rebels, Volley 'N' Bayonet).
Can I offer a friendly word of advice? Without in any way intending to preach, or try to convert you, the least satisfactory sets of AWI rules that I've come across have almost all been those designed for other 18th Century conflicts and that have either claimed to cover the AWI as well, or have been "tweaked" to incorporate it. For the AWI, purpose-written rule sets really are the better option.
Why? Well, the AWI really is a very different conflict from, say, the WAS or SYW, in terms of size, format, tactics and quality of troops (in some senses it is actually closer to Frecnh Rev/early Nap - which is actually where, in part, the origins of BG lie). The largest AWI battle is about 1/2 the size of the smaller mainstream actions of the SYW, and there are few cavalry and little use of artillery beyond the "battalion gun" calibres. Throw in the much more enclosed terrain - even in long-settled areas - and it is really much more like the "kleine krieg/petite guerre" seen in Europe - hence your need for "extra" light infantry rules.
That said, you are always welcome to post any questions or ideas here.
Hello,
Something else to have in mind (in addition to RtL's comments above) is the figure-ratio. Light troops tactics don't really work well at higher figure ratios, if your skirmish screen is one figure it is unlikely to have much effect on the unfreindly regiment advancing to it's front... BG! works at varied ratio's but I freqently use 1:10. Many 'other' 18th century rule sets are designed for 'higher level' actions so don't function so well at this level...
