British plume colours
Hello
Brain picking time again.
Does anyone have any info on colours of British plumes, not Saratoga campaign as this is covered. I've seen them illustrated as black or red, and would default to black unless anyone knows of some unit specific colours. The only one I'm happy with is doing the 23rd with white feathers.
There are records of light infantry wearing black; later in the war, there is a suggestion of them using dark green. Some of the 2nd Light Infantry companies dyed their feathers red after Paoli.
As the war progressed, the grenadier battalions went into hats and may have adopted white feathers (by the end, the sole surviving battalion certainly had done this).
Other than the Foot Guards (a portrait of an officer shows a black feather) I cannot think of any line units actually adopting feathers, although I may be wrong; the 23rd's white feather(s) were not noted officially until an inspection report of 1784.
