Chattertons Hell
Needed a rules refresher before a much bigger game next week so thought I would try White Plains again.
Last time out Haslet got a mauling from Cleavelands 12pdrs so having read the scenario properly this time I deployed him on the hill out of harms way. OK ,we know we are going to get beaten but how much damage can we inflict before the inevitable?
Not much happened at first with the Hessians hammering away at their bridge and then Maitland and Leslie arrived and promptly headed for the American right leaving a frontal approach to the Hessians.
The American artillery got a couple of long range shots off at the Hessians who were dawdling along picking up DP every time they moved. Then Cleavelands 6drs opened up and destroyed the American battery causing Putnams horse to bolt into the advancing Hessians. Oh dear, but then again he wasn't much use anyway.
McDougall came forward to help bolster the line as the British started through the woods and up the hill with the 17th LD on the flank eyeing up the 19th Conneticut on top of the hill.
The Hessian Grenadiers were now loosing off enormous volleys at Putnams militia cowering behind the redoubt and casualties began to mount. The Maryland Continentals and 3rdNY came to the edge of the wood determined to throw the British back down the hill before the militia crumbled and exposed their flank. At this point the 1st NY skirmishers got a good volley off at the 49th bringing them up to 3DP and looking vulnerable to a charge but then got off such a good volley themselves it stopped the Marylanders in their tracks.
Then the Hessian fusiliers volleyed Haslets skirmishers driving them way back and Haslet (uncharacteristically) took to his heels, never to be seen again leaving McDougall the sole remaining American commander. The 17th then charged the 19th Conn utterly destroying them and it was game over.
Even worse result than last time; the British were hardly out of breath and suffered about 20 casualties.
One old habit remains though and that is my ability to lose officers at any opportunity. Glad to be umpiring the game next weekend; the fewer combat dice I roll the merrier.
regards
Paul
Paul,
I love this scenario. In fact it is my next AWI gaming event. I have a couple of buddies that live in the NY area, 1 on Long Island, 1 up on the Hudson. Next time I'm gaming with them, we're going to see how well they do defending the home-turf so to speak.

Yes,I like the scenario as well. Those 12 pdrs. made a real mess of me.I underestimated them and payed the cost. This is a battle like Bunker Hill where you can keep playing it and it's going to be fun. :D
