Finding Opponents
What's a good way to find opponents? I've only recently gotten into historical wargaming, but I've also moved away from my local friends who I've wargamed with since high school. The only local club I've found is atleast 2 bus trips away, so carting a load of 28mm's through Central Manchester and Salford doesn't really appeal... What sources do you guys all use?

Hi, this is the only one in the Manchester area that I am aware of http://www.maws.org.uk/ I met my mates by attending local shows. The local clubs usually put on a good display (as least distance to travel) and its a good way to meet the chaps and discuss your areas of interest. Many will play more than one period or scale not just the one thats currently in their display ! I havent got a date for Britcon 2009 yet, but that would be a good place to start. PS you should get a really really god anorak if you plan on staying in Manchester !!! I used to cycle from Fallowfield in south Manchester all the way to Salford Royal Infirmary and was invariably soaked. Took my daughter back to Uni their twice recently. Torrential rain both times so far

In Manchester you have two main Clubs, MAWS, mentioned above, who meet at Walkden on a Monday night and the Mailed Fist who meet at Hyde on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Both are good clubs. The Mailed Fist play a lot of Napoleonics and 7YW, but in 15mm and we use GdB. We also have a Fast play version for large games. Most of us can provide two or more armies, but we normally play two or three per side. Next meeting is on Sunday. http://www.maws.org.uk/mailedfist/index.html I am afraid this is slightly out of date as we do not meet at the festival theatre, but at an old scout hut off High St, actually Knivtn S, (Whatever that means). However its up the side of the Corner shop, just under halfway up High St, turn right at the Garages. If you are interested, let me know. I know there are a lot of little groups of two or three players who meet at their own houses, so you might get some contacts if you advertise.

That's great thanks, I'd not spotted the mailed fist one. I went to Britcon 2008 at the University, was next to my first year halls, but was shy so didn't actually talk to anyone. I just loitered though looking at the Waterloo and Naseby/Marston Moor displays. I live next door to the University as I work there, though for the moment without pay. Do you need to bring along full forces and so on? As I've only just started collecting and have a pile of unpainted perry/victrix plastics.

I would just turn up at present, we are doing a Napoleonic 15mmm game next meeting, Sunday 25th Jan. We will have plenty of Troops. If you get there any time after 11am, that should be Ok. Just pull open the big green steel door and walk through to the Hall.
