Firing ranges
I really like these rules and am considering switching to them from Warfare in the Age of Reason. However there are still some anomalies I don't understand- maybe I'm missing something obvious! Firing ranges for musketry is one issue. Effective is 6", long is 12". this looks too long to me. If the ground scale is 50 yards to the inch (28mm) then the effective range is 300 yards-surely way out of line for smoothbore muskets... I would have thought an effective range of 100 yards was more likely and a long range of 200 yards. may be Angus can throw some light on this Chris F

Chris, I think the ground scale given for 25/28mm is a typo. The 15mm ground scale is 1" represents 30 yards. The musket range is given as 20cm (8"), which makes extreme range 240 yards. Using this range for 25/28mm would give a ground scale of 1" represents 20 yards. Simon

Thanks for your comments Simon! If indeed it should 1" should equal 20 yards in 28mm then you're right.... I would be interested in Angus's comments...thanks again Chris

There are indeed more than a few typos - partly my fault, and partly the poor editor, who wasn't a wargamer! That's why publishing houses have professional copy editors... Anyway, the arguments discussed above are all quite correct, and the range, while a tad long, is really a gaming thing, rather than a pure reflection of ground scale. We tinkered with various ranges and ground scales, and simply this one produced the most enjoyable game. Long range musketry isn't particularly effective, and the sensible commander will wait until the enemy close within 6". If we had it even closer, then we'd get into all sort of muddles with the charge sequence. However, feel free to tinker - that's what this gentlemanly hobby is meant to be all about! Best Wishes, Angus Konstam www.edinburghwargames.com

Thanks Angus, that is very helpful Chris PS I also game WSS and I think with a few minor amendments these ules would work pretty well for the period. Any interest in my suggested amendments? I will be trying them out in September when i get back from the UK...
