I have just come across this web site which has a number of interesting articles and photos/illustrations. It challenges the size and proportions of some of the designs on the British colours and there is an article on the Hessian colours. I would be interested to know what others, who are better informed than I am, think of the information. http://www.dupagemilitaryflag.com/index.html

There is some very interesting material on that site, isn't there. I do recall some years back, the recreated "Royal Yorkers" had some problems when they had a set of colours made, because they couldn't get the St Andrew's cross to fit properly so that the corners of the flag bisected each of the four arms of the cross. http://royalyorkers.ca/

Looks an interesting article - good find. I didn't know that the finial cords were red, whether plain or weaved with silver (which would of course match the sashes worn by officers).

That is an excellent set of articles! I must admit that I'd suspected as much for years, as the central devices of colours hanging in regimental museums and churches (some of them dating back to pre-1800) always have much smaller central devices than those depicted on wargames flags. But from a stylistic point of view, I must confess that I prefer the large devices purely because they are aesthetically pleasing and given the choice, would choose them over realistic ones. Similarly, I've often used over-scale flags for those nations and units that carried small flags (e.g. cavalry regiments, Napoleonic French, Duchy of Warsaw). As an aside - I did once come across a preserved KGL King's Colour that was 'upside-down'...

This is bad news for anyone wanting to see the designs on 6mm flags! Consensus seems to be "Nice Flag Trumps Reality" everytime, especially if it means you can see the design... But, this is not the only thing we do that is not strictly to scale and relatively minor in comparison to unit-depth so I don't feel I should worry about it too much... Bearing in mind it is difficult to demonstrate how many units carried their colours anyway... Interesting links though GJ
