Formation Change Question
We fought the Battle of Iuka again last night and had a great time. The Union actually won the game for the first time in five tries. About 450+ 28mm figs fighting it out on my new redwood gaming table. A question came up regarding formation changes. I understand that a unit cannot gain ground through a formation change and the new formation should be centered on the old formation. It's not clear to me if the new formation has to face the same direction as the old formation. Can a unit in line (whose flank is threatened) make a formation change into a new line facing to its flank (i.e. was facing North, now is facing East)? Would this cost 1/2 Move (Line to Line)? Or would the North-facing unit have to form into Double Line (1/2 Move) facing North and use the remaining 1/2 Move to wheel East and face the flank threat?

C, Can a unit in line (whose flank is threatened) make a formation change into a new line facing to its flank (i.e. was facing North, now is facing East)? Would this cost 1/2 Move (Line to Line)? No...as that would entail a formation change AND a change of face. However it could simply wheel at standard speed to face the threat. The Line to Line 1/2 movement on the Formation Change Table only refers to changing from Line to Extended Line and vice versa. DB
