Franco Prussian
Hi people, Only 300 SYW front rank to go, and then its on to my next project, Now for thirty odd years I have fancied having a go at Franco Prussian war, I know the Foundry do a complete range but I really dont like there buying system or there prices, so what are the alternatives, I like 28mm not 25mm, So any ideas would be appreciated.
Very limited I am afraid! Castaway Arts in Australia produce French and Prussians, the Battle Honors range from OldGlory15s in the US produce some figures (intended for the 1859 War, but does include Prussians and French but armed with muskets) or finally ebay for Foundry figures at a better price. Fortunately all three ranges are compatible with each other.
Hope this helps,
Matt
Thanks, just looked at Castaway, but was not really impressed, So looks like foundry :x or maybe a rethink ie something post Napoleonic (got it) but pre ww1 (got it)
foundry are good figures even if some of the posing seems a bit dated now, lack of animation in many figures
keep your eye out for deals though which help the bank balance, for instance they have a 20% off deal until 2nd september and usually do one at christmas/new year time too. also the unit deals help a bit as well
Even with there 20% deal they are still blooming expensive seeing as how they are old figures. Its not that I am tight its just I dont like beeing ripped off, ok I am tight.
All my terrain is 28mm European, Plus cant get excited about 15mm plus cant paint what I cant see, So I just race through them and am then not happy. My Napoleonic armies are all 15mm, and to be honest every time I game with them at the back of my mind I just wish I had started it in 28mm. Thats why when I started a new period this year ie 7yw it had to be 28mm, The French and British will be finished by xmas, so starting to panic about whats next. Or is that it, a wargamer with no unpainted drawers to rummage through
Possible alternatives:
B & B Miniatures do a full range of "20mm" FPW figures. These figures are BIG for 20mm, the character is unique (You will either love 'em or hate 'em). Do not be put off by the painted figures in the Gallery which I believe do not do them justice. Your 25mm buildings etc would fit.
Other wars which have the appeal/colour of the FPW:
Helion 1866 figures-check out the pictures on this forum.
Battle Honors 1859 range-old but very nice in their own right.
First Schleswig Holstein War from Waterloo To Mons (these are my own figures but I think the war has great wargaming possibilities).
Perry Miniatures Carlist War range. Again colourful, more reasonably priced than Foundry and beautiful sculpts.
Regards,
Matt
Thanks for the ideas, Nearly forgot its Newbury next week, so with any luck I will see something and then bang, my wallet is empty for another year. Or I could just save my money and buy the misses a big present.
Franco - PrussiansIf you're looking for some really nice 25mm Prussians I can certainly recommend the Helion range. Although they're technically marketed 1866 Austro-Prussian war (vice 1870 Franco-Prussian) the Prussian uniform is basically just the same. These figures have loads of variety and great detail - clean castings too. The range is new and expanding all the time. Check out the Helion website
http://www.wargames.helion.co.uk/ I've posted some pictures of my painted figures on GdB's '1866 Helion range' forum (I inadvertently deleted a couple of slides from my PhotoBucket account hence a couple of missing photos). I've also posted their Austrian opponents on the 'Helion 1866 Austrians - photos' forum. The other thing about Helion is they do a really nice range of flags for the Prussians. You'll likely be able to get some from the Caliver Books stand if you're going to Colours at Newbury. Hope this posting helps.
Thanks for that . I will certainly have a look, need to go to Caliver to get the new scenario books for my acw anyway. Ho hum looks like the missus will not be getting a new fur coat
