Frei battalion No.6 Rapin 1756
I've finally painted another battalion of Prussians. Hope you like
They do look the part! I especially like the mixture of poses within the unit because one could use them equally well for a skirmish game. The figures look like being based individually. Are they?
Thankyou for the comment. Yes they are based individually except for the command base with the mounted officer. The rules say that you can simply spread out the close order bases in a skirmish screen but I think if you're going cough up for 28mm, you may as well make them look nice. I prefer a dispersed looking skirmish screen. I've put steel paper on the individual bases and the movement tray is magnetic for when they're in close order. I liked the villanous look of the Foundry frei corps but I don't like them for rank and file - unless they're Garrison troops.
They look very effective, the officer looks a mean sod. Hope they fight well for you
I think I read somewhere that most Prussian officers fought on foot except the adjutant who was mounted so that he could do his job of marking out where the battalion was to deploy. Seeing as how these guys are irregular, I bent the rules. I think I'll have to class them as militia which means they'll be useless in close order unless they're defending buildings or cover. I've yet to see how skirmishers this duff actually manage under the skirmish rules. My guess is to use them to screen my line units from cannister fire. One thing seems strange in the rules. Prussian units in line move 8" but skirmishers only seem to move 6". This would be silly and they must move 8". Has anyone else noticed this?
Gentelmen my apologies I'm talking gibberish again. Page 34 Movement rates. Skrimish infantry move 8" However I notice that, like Prussian line infantry and Elite and Veteran infantry, they move 8" but can only charge 6". Is this the way you guys game? Do you move your Elites and Veterans at 8" per move but only give them 6" charge range?
