GaG at the Durham Show
Here are some ACW pics from the Durham Wargames Group show last w/e of Richmond Ky - depicting the fighting at Duncannon Lane in 28mm (my boys) and Andy Copestake's 40mm game. The combined armies of Bragg and Kirby Smith invaded Kentucky in the late summer of 1862, hoping to liberate Middle Tennessee and recruit middle-state Kentuckians for the Confederacy. The Union armies were widely separated with the nearest, (Buell’s) moving torpidly from northern Alabama towards Chattanooga. Operating in the eastern flank, Smith set out with half his army (9,000 men) for Lexington and a rendezvous with Morgan’s independent cavalry command. The invasion caused a panic. As Buell’s army headed north, the Union commander-in-chief, Halleck, sent “Bull” Nelson north to command the hastily gathered assemblage of 6,500 Union defenders. The Federal department commander, General Wright sent orders to Nelson to defend the Kentucky River line north of Richmond. Ignoring Wright’s advice, Nelson massed his forces south of Richmond with Cruft’s brigade on the southern edge of the town and Manson’s two miles to the south. Mission: The Confederates must drive the Union army from Duncannon Lane and hold the Richmond Pike. The Union troops must try to prevent this and hold their positions. The armies lined up like this:

Mc Cray pushes back the Fed skirmishers from White's Farm. Hill moves in upon the Federals in the lane in brigade column. They have collected a "Rebell Yell" token on the way in!
It proves too much for the raw Union defenders who buckle under the onslaught which leads to a failed brigade test and the collapse of the entire Union left.

The next pics are of Andy's game. He's totally sold on 40mm! It is obvious to see why with these Sash & Sabre figures. My Redoubt figures are based on 20mm frontages and his 40s are on a 25mm frontages - so not much difference in terms of taking up valuable table space.
