Historicon 2009 Game
Here are some photos of our pick-up game at Historicon. Most of the figures are mine (Front Rank) with a few Americans provided by my buddy. I was indroducing the rules for four new players, so I tried to keep the game small and simple. In this "made-up" scenario the Americans were defending a crossroads while the British attacked the position both frontally and from the flank. We used about 12 regiments per side with an assortment of artillery. The Americans had two Continental brigades classed as "line" and two brigdes of militia, classed as ... militia. The British also had four brigade: two of British regulars (line), one of elites (grenadiers and light infantry) and 1 of Hessians (2nd line). Now for the photos, if I can remember how to do this darn thing. The table was a simple felt with a little terrain. It doesn't look great, but worked for what we were trying to accomplish. > > > > >

Hey ... Getting better at this picture stuff. My British are all Front Rank and not in the necessary campaign style. Alas, some day I will re-do them using Perry's. But until then, these will have to do. If only I had seen the Perry stuff when I started out. :( As for the battle: The British on the right could make little headway against the Continental Infantry defending the American left. Time and again the British and Hessians launched assualts on the American line only to be stopped. But things fell apart (in classic AWI fashion) for the Americans as nothing could stop the attack of the British elite brigade. After several hours of battle, the American right was turned and Washington was forced to concede the crossroads and retire from the field. The new players all enjoyed the game. This was a new type of rule system for them so it took them a while to sort out their attacks. One player, frustrated with trying to re-deploy some militia was sounding like Washington himself ... "damn these militia!" Mike B

This looks great. You have me rethinking my preference for historical scenarios. Maybe fictional engagements are worth further consideration. Personally, I think the felt terrain looks good ... and the figures look terrific! Sorry I didn't make it to the show -- the car is still in the shop, so I can't even blame the wife.

Nice to see your army in action, they are looking good. An effective and convincing scenario too... Is that the Bithday-Painted GW in the background? GJ

Washington is in the background of the picture of the Continental artillery. I was really pleased with the way he came out ... at least for my painting skills. As for scenarios ... I still prefer something historical but as I am collecting AWI alone, I am limited in what I can accomplish. My AWI buddy lives in St. Louis, a mere 5 hours away, so I can't count on his stuff for regular gaming. One thing I do (most ofthen with ancient battles) is to take a historical battle and the circumstances facing the two commanders and re-fight the battle using the miniatures I have available. So while I will never be able to do Germantown with all the regiments given in the scenario, I can recreat the same battle with fewer units. Sounds good anyway ... Mike B
