maneuvering and firing on a charge
I love these rules. I think they really capture the period well. I have one question, though. In DKK, can a defending unit both maneuver and fire on a charge? If so, how far can a unit move in response to a charge and still be allowed to fire with the minus two penalty? The text of the rules states that after the charging unit moves its half distance (which in an earlier post was clarified as half the distance to the target), the defending unit may move the equivalent of the charger's move and/or fire. To me, this would mean that a defending unit could move a maximum of half its movement distance and fire with a minus two penalty. In example B, however, an infantry unit about faces (a maneuver that takes half a move, which to my mind is the equivalent of moving a maximum of half your distance), and is then not allowed to fire on a charging formation of cavalry. The cavalry unit started its charge from twelve inches away (its maximum charge move), which would mean that they would have expended half of their movement by the half way point of the charge. If the defending unit is allowed to move the equivalent of the charger's move and fire, why was the infantry in this example not allowed to perform a half-move and fire? If the cavalry had started from less than their maximum distance (say ten inches), I could understand the infantry not being allowed to fire, because in this case the cavalry would not have expended half of their total movement at the half-way point of the charge. The infantry, requiring fully half of their movement to about face, would not have been able to complete this maneuver in time to fire. Could anyone clarify this for me?

There must be alot of lurkers on this forum, but I'll take a shot at the answer bearing in mind I dont have the rules handy; For simplicity sake we break it down thus: Non-Prussian troops can move up to half and fire at penalty Prussians can move up to half and fire with no penalty Any movement over half nobody fires Angus has stated this is a gentlemanly game. The rules aren't so rigid that you are not free to interpret them differently or adjust them for your own use. As long as both sides can agree you should clap hands at a bargain go with what your experience has shown you.

Thanks for the insight. I like the way your group handles this, and I think I will suggest it to the folks in my AO (central and western Virginia). In an earlier post that I read, it was mentioned that some of the examples in the chapter on charges don't match the text of the rules. Perhaps this is one of those instances. If anybody else has any further insight, I would appreciate that also. I have really gotten a lot out of reading the discussion on this site. Thanks again to flick40 for the very helpful reply.
