Massed columns question
Hi all We tried the new massed columns rules last night and they worked very well. We did have a couple of questions though. Massed columns are a charge formation only, Yes They charge at line speed, Yes Massed columns cannot be the target of a charge, Yes Massed columns can be targeted for firing when not charging ? Do they move at line speed ? As they are advancing to their intended victim/s do they all move at the column rate of 9" or do they move at 6". They are still massed columns and we could not agree on what rate they should move at. I will post some pics of our latest couple of encounters on our club site in the gallery section. Cheers Kev

Massed column bonuses only apply when charging. However, do the disadvantages only apply then. With +1 per supporting column when fired at this makes columns prone to casualties. On the other hand, these casualties will be spread out over several columns. Personally, I would favour the +1 per supporting unit. My understanding of their movement rate is that massed columns will continue to move at columnn rate until such time as they charge, which will be at line rate. It will be interesting to see DBs position on this. Ants

Thanks for the reply Ants. Yeah would be good to hear mr Browns thoughts on this. We have played that you could claim the +1 massed column bonus when firing or just fire at a single column. Should that choice be available, or should it be one or the other. I think the move rate is as you say and we will stick with that.

K, Massed columns can be targeted for firing when not charging ? Yes. Do they move at line speed ? At column speed until they charge. DB

Thankyou Mr Brown for clearing this one up for us. We do like the new massed columns rule. And the new general modifiers make you think a bit more about where to let him influence the battle at that particular moment. The rules do give a very good feel to how a Naps battle should be. Looking foward to the Deluxe Edition.
