MDF Bases
:? I'm in need of pre-cut MDF bases, around 150mmx60mm...sadly, most suppliers only go up to 100mm, due to the cutters they have. Any ideas please?

Does it have to be MDF? Litko can do custom sizes in plywood: http://www.litkoaero.com/

Peeler, Tony at ERM makes bases in any size you like. He's happy to go above the 100mm threshold, so long as you accept that anything over that size may be "the odd millimetre" out! http://www.eastridingminiatures.co.uk/

Peeler As on TMP I'd be carful going this big with MDF as it might warp. Probably worth varnishing both sides before applying anything wet to it like base texture or filler.

:D Thankyou Timmo, I appreciate the point..I'll have to think on that, though I was going to magnabase them anyway, and hold 'em down an a metal box whilst drying. I'll see hows I go..by way, is that the same Timmo as was/is on WD?

I am new to miniatures and will need a basing solution shortly. I have looked at a variety of base materials -- MDF, plywood, metal, plastic, mounting cardboard -- and I have no idea which is most suitable. I'm tending toward the thin (0.8mm) plywood offered by Litko at the link above, but wonder about the strength of this thin wafer. I would hate to have it snap after I've invested all that time into filling, painting, and flocking. This is a new 15mm AWI army, so the dimensions of the bases will conform to the BG! recommendations for that scale. Minimizing the profile of the base is attractive, but not if it will snap easily. Has anyone had any experience with these thin plywood bases? Alternatively, what do you use and why? Also, is it idiotic for me to consider milling down the figures' metal bases to further reduce the basing profile? What unintended consequence to I introduce therewith?

Cacadores, thank you for your recommendation. "Dries like concrete, is light and lasts forever" are definitely qualities I'm looking for. Your formula will be part of my calculus.

I have a similar issue to Belisarius. My French opponent has based his artillery on the smallest bases suggested in the rules, I for aesthetic reasons, had gone for the larger, but that has placed me at a disadvantage both in terms of manoeuvre and ebing able to mass fire. But chiselling the figures off their card, glue and sand bases is a real pain :!:

Cornett, I have used the Litko 0.8mm to base a good part of my 15mm Napoleonic figures (GdB base sizes) and have had no problems. I am now adding the thin magnetic adhesive bases from Litko to these. I have also used the thin magnetic Fox bases. I do a fill with white glue and then top with sand to base level. After that dries, I paint and when dry paint on a diluted white glue and add static grass.

Milt, Do you have a contact for Litko and Fox? Currently using artists card, 2mm and planning to paint the underside with magnetic paint. This will allow the bases to stand on thin sheets of magnetic rubber to allow me to move a battalion all at once. This sounds time consuming and your Litko bases may be simpler. Thanks, Ants
