Multiple Targets
Hi All, If a veteran unit of 36 figures armed with rifle muskets firing at effective range at a target, which consisted of an unlimbered battery a unit in column and a unit in line behind a wall, what modifiers would be used. I just want to make sure we are playing the rules correctly. Thanks. Carlo.

Hi Carlo. Rule 9.5 "Multiple Targets", suggests you make one 2D6 roll, and apply the "majority formation modifier". In the circumstances you've described, at my club, for simplicity we would compute this as the mathematical 'average' as follows: a) Firer= +0 Veterans firing (assuming you didn't fire last turn); b) Targets= -3 for the deployed artillery, +1 the infantry in column, -1 the infantry line in light cover (behind wall); c) Gross Modifer = -3, divided by 3 target units = Net '-1' as the majority formation modifier. Depending on the number of casualties inflicted (e.g., if less than 3), we would dice to determine which targets received the casualties (1-2 = unit on left, 3-4 = unit in centre, etc.). If you were fortunate enough to roll a Double Six, we would roll a die for the receiving unit, per Rule 13.1, to determine the additional effects applicable to only that target. Just my 2P - hope that helps!
