Hi all guys, I dunno if it is required, still I do not like to skip presentation so.....here I am . I am 35 yo italian wargamer who just bought the GDB 2nd edition ruleset. I have been practicing Historical wargames for over 12 years, altought I have to stop for a while due to lack of opponents and real life issues :D Now I have got some spare time to start again with my passion and I decided to focus on a ruleset allowing me to enjoy battles even more. with my old group we usually used Armati and Shako plus some homemade ruleset very speicific Napoleonic scenarios or ACW battles...... but they didn't prove satisfactory. That's why after a careful reserach I opted for GDB. Still I am quite new to the rules and I will need a lot of help from the community, but I am sure I will find all the answers to any question it should eventually arise in my mind in order to better clarify the rules :) For the moment I greet youy all Neapolitan

Welcome!
Welcome! So, are you an "Italian wargamer" as in someone who wargames the Italians, or are you yourself Italian? I do the Russians, myself. Yours, James D. Gray

Yes, I am italian and I am sure you can also figure which city aswell ;) and I do usually play Neapolitan and/or Italian Army :D Unfortunately I have to count on French allies, even if I managed to stand my role in many battles ! I am actually working to use my troops within the GdB rules, altought I am still working to master the rules yet

Hello there, welcome aboard. We're always keen to have "new blood". I'm sure you will find the answers to many of your questions if you search back through the archives. If not everyone here is usually very helpful. Are there many miniatures gamers in Italy?

Hello there, welcome aboard. We're always keen to have "new blood". I'm sure you will find the answers to many of your questions if you search back through the archives. If not everyone here is usually very helpful. Are there many miniatures gamers in Italy? we got various clubs playing wargames around the country with a lot of people preferring Ancient\medieval ruleset and battles with Armati and Fields of Glory above all. Many also play FoW. In Naples, where I do live, we got a old group of wargamers and a 2nd generation (mine) counting about 20-28 (counting either wargames\FoW and warhammer) players, but we are trying to improve our ranks.

Welcome! Always nice to have new members come aboard. Folk here are reasonably helpful, and if they can't help, they'll at least be hospitable :) I'm also working on Italians at present - Fontanelli's 12th Division from the 1813 Autumn campaign. Id be interested to know what you have based your collection upon.

We are basing my unit as following: INFANTRY we got a variety of figure basing due to differences between the various army lists: French (and alled deployed along French Regimental structure), either Line and Light are based on 30x15 mm bases (3 figures per base). Many are based on 40x15 with 4 figures and we also used 20x15mm bases for some specific unit (i.e. English line) in order to respect the high number of comanpies in a single battallion. CAVALRY 40x30 mm with 3 figures on each base. For units requiring 2 figures per Base we use 30x30mm (the ones we also use for ADC). ARTILLERY always on 40x40 bases (as per generals) I know, it is a bit irregular for the standard basing as described in the ruleset, but, as I stated in another post, we are also trying a kind of INTRO scenarios with less figures (actually, half of the effectives - on a single rank) on the field. Also we try to avoid, where possible, odd number of figures in Battalions (i.e. 28 fig. Austrian HEavy Cavalry or Prussian Landwher) usually choosing an even number of figures.

Neapolitan, I apologise for being unclear. My question was directed at the order of battle you were basing your collections upon. Is it a specific campaign? Or a collection of particular units? I look forward to your response, and your participation on the forum.

It is up to you whether you form an army from a collection of units or from a specific campaign. My preference is to take a particular battle order at a particular time and mirror that. My Britis are Based on the 4th and 5th divisions at Salamanca. Russians, III and IV corps at Borodino. However, my French were origionally part of I Corps for Borodino, but I have since added Young Guard and Guard cavalry to do 1813 and 1814 as well, so thay are more a collection of units now. Even though the units are based on a particular moment in time, that does not stop me using them for earlier or later campaigns. The only comment I would add is that it is best to standardise unit strengths to a certain degree, as otherwise it is a nightmare, in the middle of a battle, trying to remember what the starting strength of the units were.
