Passage of lines
For me GdB is the best tactical napoleonic game that I ever played. The rules are well tested and tactics of napoleonic era are (almost) all represented. Rather than think a modifier of +1 for this, +2 for that etc, I suggest a new useful rule: Passage of lines. When you have a damaged infantry unit in line under enemy fire, you could use "passage of line" for retire it moving through friendly fresh unit deployed behind. From Valmy to Waterloo (a Clash of Arms) use thi s rule and work well. Interpenetration rule does not consent it, and your frustrated unit will stay until negative morale testing. What do you think about it?

No interpeneration is allowed except you can move through a battery but become unformed , I think. Guns at Gettysburg allows it , but both units become unformed I think ,will have to check. I don't know why it is not allowed in GdB ? Perhaps for 3rd edition ?

G, Actually Passage of Lines is not interpenetrating another formed unit. Passage of Lines is filing through the deployment gaps within a brigade deployment area. Interpenetration of one unit by another is a dangerous thing in battle and was very rarely carried out, esp. close to the enemy as it often resulted in disorder. And as we all know disorder could spell the end of any battalion! However I have eased up a little on interpretation and you may now wish to include the following for both GdeB and GaG. b) Close order units in line formation (including cavalry in squadron lines) may pass through: • Close order units deployed in line, (N/A if charging) & • Deployed batteries, (N/A if charging.) • Units may not end their move within another unit. If they do not have enough movement to pass through completely the manoeuvre may not be carried out. • Units being passed through may not undertake any movement or firing whatsoever during the turn in which it is passed through. David, is there a consequnce for the passage? will unit be unformed after the passage or be classed as formed?

colinjallen- 08-01-2009

I am really not sure that formed Napoleonic units should be allowed to pass through each other. Formed units moving through artillery batteries, subject to the penalties that you mention, seems sensible (columns should also be able to do this), but possibly the unit should be unformed. Colin ps: Swine Flu is not nice!

DB thanks DB. We are using the rules above but, after passage of lines, both units are unformed excluded unit in grand bandes passed through that stay formed. Another question: recall brigade skirmishers. If you have different troop in a brigade (veteran/line/conscript), what do you use for recall the company in the unit? The best, the worse or the average? thanks gio

G, When recalling skirmishers always use the majority troop grade. So if you have 6 conscripts and 12 line - then class as Line. DB
