Perry AWI new releases
I was just wondering if anybody knows if there are anymore AWI releases planned from Perry Miniatures, I know they now have lots of fingers in lots of pies but it has been ages !! Cheers, Dave.

I think he's done with the British for a while and is working on some more Continental/Militia packs, possibly revisiting some of the stuff he did at Foundry. The Waterloo and ACW plastics are top priority at the moment I think.

Talk about a let down
I was so excited about the topic...then the news about nothing new.... Ugggh....

Cornet- 07-18-2009

I've been seriously considering starting into the Perry AWI line; I've even got my dad interested in joining the hobby. The news that they're not putting much effort into new AWI figures has indeed dampened my enthusiasm for 25/28mm.

There is still plenty of miniatures to choose from with the Perry AWI line to keep you busy, not to mention they are simply the best on the market vs any scale!Believe me,when you open your first pack your face will turn into one big grin. I've never regretted buying them. One more thing, don't forget the Perry's older AWI stuff from foundry that is also excellent. They are are bit smaller, but not enough to make a difference.Combine the Perry's line and their Foundry stuff and you can just about make any unit you wish.Check out the Gallery and you can see were I mixed both the Perry line and their Foundry line and the difference is slight if you even spot it.Get out your wallet and make some of the best miniature buys in your life!

No need for doom and gloom, chaps! True there are still some gaps to be filled - Continental light infantry and cavalry, some of the smaller corps (Pulaski's, Lee's etc(, and Continentals in peaked caps - but Alan intends to get to these in time. The quality and variety of pose are such that they are worth waiting for IMO. And as Axebreaker says, there's plenty that can be done with what's already available.

The news that they're not putting much effort into new AWI figures has indeed dampened my enthusiasm for 25/28mm Cornet, are you serious?! 8) Alan Perry has made 36 packs for Foundry and 144 packs for his own company. That's probably almost 1,000 different figures in total; and within that total are gems like Queen's Rangers hussars and artillery, Hessian amusettes, British light dragoons in foot, black militia, i.e. stuff that hardly anyone else has done or is ever likely to do. Alan's Perry's range is probably pretty much solely responsible for the great surge of interest in the period over the past few years, so I think we can allow him a bit of a breather from time to time... EC and I have seen the masters of a pack of "northern" militia. There are rumours that a pack of Dunmore's Ethiopians is in the works. As Ronan says, interest has been expressed in various other things which I'm sure will get made at some stage. The Perries seem to like releasing half a dozen packs or so at once, so I assume the next AWI release is awaiting a few packs to join those that already exist.

Thanks for the responses, Giles, great to read that you have seen some new masters, wish I had that privelige !! I am doing the Saratoga and Southern campaigns and am hoping for Dismounted Brunswick dragoons, Fergusons rifles and Volunteers of Ireland !!

The other thing about the Perrys is that if you email them and ask for the most appropriate figure for a particular unit, if it is not listed, they will e-mail back when they can and tell you which pack are most suitable.

Steady on, Giles. I do sincerely appreciate the Perry's talent and efforts ... and I may yet take the plunge; however, you have to admit that with the range incomplete and new AWI releases slowing to a trickle, the situation isn't encouraging. RtL has remarked elsewhere that few if any manufacturers ever complete their ranges, and from what I've surveyed this seems to be true. I have to ask myself if I am jumping into a product line that will stagnate. From previous exchanges, you may remember that my principal interest is in the Philadelphia Campaign. So many of the Perry's newer figures, depicting the Saratoga and Southern Campaigns, are not suitable for my purposes. And layered beneath that, I actually like the idealized 1768 Warrant Uniforms and prefer them as tabletop representatives. I appreciate the later uniforms and field modifications (and can understand why others would pursue them), but they are not my cup of tea. Yes, I know the Perrys created the Foundry AWI figures, and those are nice. However, the new figures for their own company are outstanding. It's kinda tough to swallow having to pay nearly 3x for the inferior Foundry figures. Ideally, I'd like to see the Perrys recreate and improve on their Foundry figures -- their newer sculpts are much more compelling. But that's not likely to happen, so forgive me if I admire their newer AWI figures and lament the fact that the old figures will probably not be revised and released at an affordable price. All that said, I am looking forward with great anticipation to the release of new northern militia. The Boston Campaign is second to the Philadelphia Campaign on my schedule of interests.

From what Giles has seen on a recent visit to Perry Towers, the Northern Militia currently in hand will go some way to "updating" some of the Foundry range. I've no doubt that more Continentals will gradually replace the Foundry packs, and they have asked me for research on other troop types, so there is no way this range is "done" - don't worry! Whether they will re-visit the 1768 Warrant British is another matter, as this uniform was probably not seen after 1775 or 1776 at latest (other than the odd unit coming out from Europe - eg the 3 regiments at Eutaw). If you want more of these at lower prices, I would use eBay, or wait for special Foundry deals - though I'm not sure if the US always gets these - and the 3-pack "unit deals". Alternatively, post your wants/haves on here and there will undoubtedly be people ready to "swap".

There old stuff is still very nice and your right if you buy from Foundry when it's not X-mas time then yes you pay your weight in gold.However,x-mas at Foundry,e-bay,and historical forums are a good place to pick up Foundry miniatures at affordable rates. I cannot stress enough that when you get your first miniatures from the Perry's you won't regret it. Like Giles said with what's out there you can do just about any regiment, and I'll add that with a few conversions you can do some special ones. In the end,it's up to you of course, but I haven't met a modeler yet who said to me "wish I didn't buy these Perry miniatures".

Some might consider me a heretic, but I also mix in Some Old Glory with my Perry and Foundry figures giving me even more options. I do have to admit that I'm almost exclusively painting Perry figures now that I've mostly exhausted my supply of Foundry and OG figures. Still, I can't see why anyone could be anything but enthusiastic over the Perry offerings. If you're doom and gloom about them not coming out with any AWI releases recently, consider this. They're a VERY prolific and active company that's succeeding in several other areas. That bodes well for the future availability and expansion of the AWI line. As someone who's painted up other armies for other periods only to see the manufacturer cease to exist, this is a strong plus for the Perry figures in addition to the fact that the figures are unquestionable the best available.

Ronan the Librarian- 07-24-2009

Allan, Good point about productivity. Another aspect that us non-sculptors forget (and I include myself in this group) is "period fatigue" where you just get sick of the sight of tricornes and have to do Sudanese or Cuirassiers just to get away from them. Not that different from how most of us feel about painting the same figures for a really big unit. I do have several other manufacturers that I like to mix in with Perrys - chiefly Eureka, Conquest, Old Glory and Front Rank - as the different sculpting styles and proportions make excellent characters and command.
