Gettysburg Brigade Generals
Totally new to Guns at Gettysburg (or any other game by David Brown) so if this is all "understood" info (carry-over from GdB) I apologize.
I could not find anywhere in the rules where it states how the Brigade General is to be placed on the table. I'm hoping I just missed it.
I found the basing sizes, and note that the Brigade General base is wider and deeper than a typical stand of infantry (going with a 4 figure suggested base, 2 figures in 2 ranks).
I also found the Brigade General command radius (15cm/12").
Question #1: But where is he positioned? Off to the side? Behind? Does he march with them? Must he always be touching at least one unit under his command?
I was planning on playing my first game Saturday, and I have already hit a snag regarding where leaders are placed. Take for example, a brigade of 4 regiments, each with 5 stands of 4 figures (Kimball's brigade, in the Marye's Heights scenario at the back of the rule book).
Let's say they each form a Line of Battle formation to cross the open ground. That makes for 20 bases stretched out in a long line. Where does the Brigade General go?
Question #2: Let's say the Brigade General is within his command radius of two of his four regiments. If he orders a Charge, would all four regiments charge? Or only the two that were within his radius?
Thanks.
Steve
S,
There is no rule to state where the brigadier must go - that is down to you!
Generally though it’s best to keep your brigadier as close to the main area of operations within the brigade as possible.
I.E.
If you are in column of march be at the front, or near the front but to one side.
If the brigade is deployed in line place the brigadier nearest the unit/s that are most important to keep in the line - so his morale effect is always there.
If charging always be within command radius of the charging units/s if possible or attach the brigadier if you feel the need.
Generally I would place the brigadier where he is going to have greatest impact with his command and charge bonus.
In this photo you can make out both Reb & Union brigadiers who are placed immediately behind their respective firing lines, so that their morale bonus can effect at least two units.

Hope that helps

That was very helpful, thank you! I thought the Brigade General could float about as needed, but wanted to make sure I hadn't missed some crucial sentence that dictated his location.
I noticed that in the photo, the Brigade Generals are mounted, and on round bases. I had been thinking of placing my command figures on round bases, just so they stand out from the square/rectangle bases a bit more, but was wondering if that would break some sacred rule. I see that it does not. :)
This is my first foray into ACW tabletop minis gaming. My initial read-through of the rules left me quite pleased. Kudos to you sir, it is a well presented set of rules. My only complaint ... no page numbers! The Table of Contents serves as an index of sorts, but lacking page numbers ... oh well.
Add them myself I hear you say? And deface the rules?
S,

You're not the only one who's complaining!! Imagine my disappointment at seeing the finished product that had page numbers in every draft including the one sent to the printers turn up without page numbers.
The printers assure us it was some kind of computer error!!
Never mind - but plse feel free to insert them by hand as you read through the rules!!
As a guide the INTRODUCTION page is page number 4 and Chapter 1 starts as page 5.
