Another basing Newbie question
Hi, I a freind of mine recently lent me a copy of his Guns at Gettysburg Rule book and I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to understand how to set up figures on bases. I'm pretty new to this type of wargamming (I usually only play warmachine) so somethings I'm just not familiar with. The questions are: 1. Are infantry 4 figures per base if they are regular grade soliders & the regiment is 20 figure strength? 2. If so, would the frontage of 20 mm good be good for each base? What is recommended ? since a range of 8mm-12mm is given per infantry mounted in 2 ranks? 3. Does it matter which four figures are on the base? - To clear up what I'm asking. Does one base get an officer, drummer, standard bearer, and 1 infantry. And the rest of the bases are 4 regular infantry? Does this matter? 4. Can I include more drummer or standard bearers in a 5 base regiment? or are these only limited to one base? 5. Can I have example of a regminet would look like? ie. Union 14th Indiana which is 20 figures, regular grade. How would this look on bases? What I mean, base 1 has blah blah blah on it, base 2 would have this, base 3 has/could have this, base 4, & base 5... Sorry for so many questions, all of the historical rule sets make it very difficult to understand figure set up. And my search-fu on the web is very weak as I can't find the information I want. S, Have a look at the photo of Armistead's scruffy Confederates going in at Gettysburg. 1. Are infantry 4 figures per base if they are regular grade soldiers & the regiment is 20 figure strength? A - Their grade is irrelevant to the number of figures of base. No of figs per base is dictated by how you wish to base them. Four figs per base is the suggested format as it’s a fairly standard representation, though you can have three per base for smaller regiments. 2. If so, would the frontage of 20 mm good be good for each base? What is recommended ? since a range of 8mm-12mm is given per infantry mounted in 2 ranks? A - That should be fine - the above bases are a little larger at 24mm across the front. 3. Does it matter which four figures are on the base? To clear up what I'm asking. Does one base get an officer, drummer, standard bearer, and 1 infantry. And the rest of the bases are 4 regular infantry? You can arrange the figures anyway you want - though it is best to have a clearly identifiable command base. 4. Can I include more drummer or standard bearers in a 5 base regiment? or are these only limited to one base? You can have as many as you like! 5. Can I have example of a regiment would look like? i.e. Union 14th Indiana which is 20 figures, regular grade. How would this look on bases? A - Hopefully the pic above will illustrate this.
