My first suggestion would be to water down your paints slightly - especially your white, as it looks a bit 'claggy'. Perhaps also use a slightly off-blue tone of grey underneath your white instead of the light grey you're using atm (for lack of better paints for comparison, I mean Citadel Space Wolves grey vs. Fortress Grey). Perhaps that's just me - you could also try a 50/50 mix of that grey and white as an additional layer.
Also with your inks, go for a watered down 'wash' in between your layers - in the first and second pictures it's quite obvious on the hands and trousers.

I think Alex has it spot on when he suggests that you need to water your paints down a little before applying to the figure.
Your photography is excellent and you are able to get really close up with clear pictures. This combined with the larger 40mm figure will show up warts and all on even the best of painted figures.
You mention it is your first time for using shading and layers. Kevin Dallimore has an excellent painting guide book which is useful for this. Very impressive and you will find like the rest of us your painting will improve with each batch of figures you paint.

Another tip - remember to check your figures over when you think you've finished, to make sure you've painted everything, especially if you are relying on your undercoat to show through on black items, as it can rub off whilst handling the figures during painting (there's a white/silver splodge - which looks like it could be bare metal - on the back of the firing figure's right boot). I did this years ago on the first figures I painted for someone else - Minifigs Prussian infantry advancing - and missed out the sabre/ bayonet scabbards on a couple of figures.
Nice work, Gunfreak, and I would echo Ronan's comments about tidying up. I always give a "finished" figure a careful once-over to make sure I haven't missed anything out. Usually I spot some random bits of wrong paint that need to be covered up - I always find things like the epaulette in your first photo that has some blue on it where it should be green. Don't be discouraged though - it's hard work painting figures and you are well on the way :).
