Double sixes
I just received my set of rules and set out to play my first major game with them. It featured a large Prussian army attacking a Russian force defending a hill. All of the cavalry was on the Prussian right so I could get a feel for a large cavalry battle. The Prussians suffered extremely high casualties in the center as they attacked the Russian artillery. Poor Prussian rolls did little damage to the Russian batteries, while some healthy Russian ones decimated three battalions. On the right, the two cavalry forces locked horns on the third turn. The Prussians had their cuirassiers going up against Russian dragoons, while Russian horse grenadiers faced off against some Prussian dragoons. There were four meles to be decided. The Russians won all four, two with double sixes! And then the Russian horse grenadiers rolled an 11 for their pursue test, which meant they remained as they were and were not unformed. This gave them an opportunity to devestate the supporting Prussian cavalry which was unformed by their routed countymen. The final insult was on the Prussian left where a battalion in column was hit by a Russian battery which, of course, rolled double sixes, the third of the turn. The brigade commander was killed as a result and the entire brigade was stopped cold! Things do have a way of getting out of hand very quickly with these rules, which is quite enjoyable.
