23rd... goat
Gentlemen; :D There is little point trying to avoid innuendo, so here are some Goat Pictures... It is a busy goat; its attention has been attracted by a hat and it is feeling a bit peckish - which leads us to the poll... Whose hat has taken the 23rd’s Goat’s fancy? Is it a Dashed Rebel (Dashed off and dropped it)? Or Does the label say "Christie’s London; Estd 1773"? The Ensign with the Regimental Colours is after all bareheaded... Is the 23rd’s Mascot an Aggressive Rebel Baiter  or an Embarrassing Mistake? YOU decide. I await the decision. GJ

Could I suggest that the hat belongs to an officer from an English regiment. suggest this for the following 3 reasons. 1. They are Welsh so they will expect the English to pay for everything. 2. The goat would be worried it might catch some rebel sentiment if it did consume a rebel Article  3. Most important, The British Army does not really exist. It is a collective noun for various Corps and Regiments living in differing degrees of mutual dislike and aggressive hostility. The trouble is that when there is a war on someone else is getting involved in the "family squabble" and that has to be dealt with before you can get back to the really important issues which are, of course irritating the living daylights out of any other regiment in the area. I trust this is in the spirit of the poll!!

Artist; An excellent suggestion, sadly I am unable to alter the poll to take account of this third option; it strikes me as quite possible that a Guards Officer may also be bareheaded... it does as you say seem likely - even if this is not the case - that it will be the hat of an officer on the English Establishment. The mascot is likely to take sibling rivalry very seriously and not be distracted from this by a mere war. In the event that the Hapless Hatless Ensign is the winner I shall offer a sub-poll, to determin if this is indeed Regimental Self Mutilation or an act of a darker nature. GJ

Apparently Alan Perry had intended to include the goat in the command pack of his 23rd, but then forgot when he sculpted it! Eclaireur was inconsolable for at least a week....

Ah well, chacun a son goat......

Ah well, chacun a son goat...... This brings to mind George Bernard Shaw's description of the US and UK as being "two nations divided by a common language."
