American uniforms at Breeds (Bunker) Hill
Just starting to paint up the American forces for the above, does anyone know if there was any uniformity :D to American uniforms at Breeds Hill, namely the New Hampshire and Massachusetts regiments or was it just a mish mash of various uniforms. Any help appreciated.
Had a look through the sources I have (Troiani, CMH, Blandford) but not turning up anything much.
In a nutshell, not really much in the way of uniforms. The odd officier or soldier here and there. The rest would be in civilian clothes.Speaking of mr. Troiani just use his picture of Bunker Hill as a template and your troops will look the part.
There were several units in the American forces in uniform - and quite well turned out in one or two cases - but we just don't know who most of them were, and whether they were among the units that actually saw action (especially the mix of detachments sent into Charles Town). In the majority of cases, I would suggest that uniforms were based around pre-war militia units, as there would not have been time to prepare and issue items after hostilities had begin in April. Quite possibly these were only worn by one or more companies, rather than the entire regiment/battalion.
Two examples are Sargent's and Patterson's Masachusetts regiments, with green-faced-black and blue-faced-buff respectively; I'm fairly sure that the Rhode Island regiment to which their artillery company was attached was another. I'll see if I can find some more.
