Trying t get back into AWII love the BG rules and I have like 300 perry figs unplainted for my Guilfords courthouse project.
I stopped painting becaue the my painting sucked.
I've now improved slightly and giving another regiment I try.
Still not happy with it.
The shading on the trousers dosn't realy show up, which means they look very plain

Don't give up on the AWI, the more you paint the better it gets.
By the time you get to the end of those 300 figures you will have picked up a lot of tips and techniques and finding what works for you, will notice a vast improvement.
Already between your first and second batch there is a marked improvement, so think what they will be like after 300.
The Kevin Dallimore painting guide book from Foundry is a very good investment and I think Foundry have free postage on their books on occassions.

2nd version defintire improvement. You'll get the hang of what effects look best on each figure type and manufacturer. Approach to painting a Elite miniature is different to that of a Perry or Front Rank.
Stop looking at figures so closely. Once the unit is on the table the effect of a 'mass' of figures at arms length is what matters.
Some of the figuers painters on this forum are quite superb and are not representative of the majority of wargame figures being played with. Do the best that you can do and be happy with it.
I have a similar problem, in fact I gave up 28mm and went to rotten old 15s. Then at the Milton Keynes show I bought a tin of the dipping stuff from army painter. After learning not to dip but to paint it on, oh my god what a difference. Now I realise its not everyone cup of tea, but to a naff painter like me, it is a godsend.

after thirty years of wargaming, and my worsening eyesight, I dont think my painting is going to get much better. So I think I will stand by my statement I am a naff painter.
I describe my own painting as impressionist, ie it gives a vague impression of something being there. Your painting on the other hand shows definate promise and WILL continue to get better. Keep it up.
By the way what scale are these figures? Blowing most figures up to what looks like around 150mm will show all sorts of blemishes which the eye will not generally notice especially in a group of figures.
