Craig- 05-31-2009
Beresford,
For the 2e Régt , i`ve found examples of pale blue, dark blue(white stripe) , grey & brown(blue stripe) for the overall trousers.I`ve gone with the brown.
So very varied indeed.
Regards,

Schultz,
That is a good site but perhaps a little too late for my 1809 OOB.
Craig,
I don't suppose you could also post the uniform details for the 8th hussars 1809 as well. Thanks.

:o ! I've also decided to go for a plain brown overall. I've got red plumes for the elite company (over a red pom pom), and the remainder I'm just going for black (over sky blue, aurore, and violet pom poms), although one source does show black tipped with sky blue. I've not got any comprehensive description of hussar plumage, so I may just go for black for all centre companies.
I have got in the orbat a 5th (depot?) squadron listed. Any suggestion on what that pom pom colour should be?

And while I think of it, what is the deal with colpack bags? I have a source that says red, and another that says that it was the facing colour?

Beresford, I tried PM'ing you but without joy. I've re-read this thread several times, but am still confused about what you're seeking, as there are a couple of converstations happening simultaneously. If you could summarise, by regiment, troop type, and year, I will endeavour to help, with whatever assistance my modest library may be able to provide.

Bryce,
very sorry  . The flag at the top of the page tells me that I have no new messages. I shall explore further. And yes, the thread seems to have expanded in scope somewhat.
I shall revert to your message, and reply But for the edification of others who may be interested, I am curious as to the following:
1. Plume arrangements for hussars generally, but more specifically the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 12th Hussars in 1813.
2. Colour of pompoms for a 5th squadron (units and timing as above)
3. Colour of colpack bag, or flamme if that is the right description (units and timing as above).
If anyone else has an interest in the above, shoot your hand up, and we can see about sharing the knowledge.

Hi Bryce,
a strange thing has occured. I have no mesage from you, even though I have received in my email an alert that a message has arrived. Ed, can you fix this?
No matter. Bryce, if you could send it again, or try me on my personal email, that would be appreciated.

I am doing the unit in 28mm, and have gone with black belts, and red shako cords and brading on jackets for troopers, silver for officers, and white for trumpeters. All with black plumes.
Now after reading all the posts, there is a new question, did hussars have coloured pom-poms that are unique to each squadron just like chasseurs?
And if so what colour for what squadron?
Cheers.

Beresford, based on the parameters specified, as well as your other inputs (AB figures are pre-Bardin 1812), the best information from my library is as follows:
1. Plumes:
2nd Hussars – Black/Blue/White; Black base & Blue tip/ Black base & Blue tip/Red
3rd Hussars -- Black/Black & Red tip/White; Black/Black/Red
4th Hussars – Black/Black/White; Red/Red/Red
12th Hussars – Black/White & Red tip/White; Black/White & Red tip/White
(If you have any of the 'senior commander' Hussar figures in shako rouleau, I can provide the colours for these.)
2. Pompoms: There may be a ‘typo’ or transcription error in the OOB you are using, as light cavalary (chasseur, hussar, lancer) regiments never had more than 4 squadrons in their organisation. Nafziger (Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia, p.30) specifically notes that while cuirassiers, carabiniers, and dragoons were ordered (decree of 10 January 1812) to raise a fifth squadron, their lighter brethren were specifically exempted . . . and in any case, no 5th squadrons ever made it into the campaign, given the shortages of the time. Therefore, in 1813, the typical Bardin-era regulations would have applied to the pompoms designations of the two companies in each squadron: 1st Sqdn, 1st Co. = Red; 2nd Co. = Red with White centre; 2nd Sqdn = Blue / Blue & White; 3rd Sqdn = Aurore / Aurore & white; 4th Sqdn = Violet / Violet & white.
3. Flammes for Colpacks:
2nd Hussars – Blue piped White / Red piped White / Blue piped Silver.
3rd Hussars – Red piped White / Grey-blue piped Red / Red piped Silver.
4th Hussars – Red piped Yellow / Red piped Yellow / Red piped Gold.
12th Hussars – Red piped White / Red piped White / Red piped Silver.
Hope that helps!

Bryce,
you are an absolute super-star! That is great detail, which I am sure I would not have got from hours trawling the internet. Thank you so much, and thank your library for me :D Bravo!
