15mm Cavalry base sizes ?
3 figures on a 40mm wide base ?
I am just painting some Russian Uhlans , no idea what size base to use , I want to base them in 3's for ease of movement on the table and they look better in 3's ,I think?
Basing in two's is more usual. I based some in threes, but found it awkward. As regards sizing, I find 15mmx35mm per figure to work better, although I do use large 15mm figures.
Keith, I also use three horse bases as I typically have six figures squadrons for most regts. These bases are 35mm wide by 25mm deep as per the following pic. They fit OK, but still give the boot to boot impression that I like for cavalry.

Thanks that looks great :)
What sort of frontage do you use for you infantry ?
I have based my first unit of russians on a 10mm frontage /figure and it looks too spaced out , the company is on a 40mm wide base.
Keith, I think that 10mm is about right. My bases are as follows:
four fig coy - 20 x 25mm
five fig coy (three up front an two rear) - 25 x 25mm
six fig coy - 30 x 25mm
eight fig coy - 40 x 25mm
fives below:

Great stuff thanks again.
I will stick to the 10mm frontage and have done my first unit with the 25mm depth so I'l keep going.
basing 15mm cavalry
Keith,
I use 35mm deep bases for 18mm cavalry, and a width of 12mm per horse. That permits the figures to be staggered slightly across the base, so you can position them knee behind knee. It also means that any horses stretched out at the gallop do not hang out over the edges of the base. I also base larger units in bases of four. I think a frontage of two looks like a pair of staff figures. I don't think anyone in our group uses bases of two for mounted units.
Thanks I will see how they fit.
I'm a bit sick of painting infantry after 4 battalion in the last week , so I'll finish this last one off and paint my Uhlans , got an old bag of Old Glory Uhlans 31 horses and 34 riders for $41 :) They look like good figures too.
I use 10mm frontage for both infantry and cavalry; it looks good to me. Some of the cavalry are based in 3s and some in 4s.
I love the Italian guard unit!
