REVISED GENERALS MORALE MODIFIER
All,
Just to keep things ticking along a revision of the generals morale modifier.
C in C's and Brigade Generals will only affect a units morale, by +1, if phyiscally in contact with that unit.
The charge command radius is unaffected.
Morale Table revisions are:
CinC or Brigadier attached = +1
Unit is in Square = +2
Unit is in Buildings = +2
Charging Flank/Rear, Unformed or Skirmishers = +2
Unit has No Casualties = +1

DB,
I'm sure this is a dumb question, but has this been game tested? Just that the only reason any of VBs charges go in is because of the +1 from the commander in close proximity. Currently, without any other modifiers, a charge will be successful 72% of the time, or 83% with the general bonus. Most units at present have the +1, with new rules obviously not.
However, it is hard to see how the commander can influence morale from 15cm (150 yards) away. New rule seems OK, will try it out this weekend.

CC,
Oh yes....would I hoist a new rule on you without play testing:wink:
The rationale is:
A) Greater "realism", as you've noted.
B) Make players think about where/how they launch their attacks or form their defence.
C) Significantly increase game resolution - i.e. games come to a conclusion more quickly.

Looks good , I'm all point for point C) and games being resolved quicker , it becomes a bit of a war of attrition units chipping away at each other at range.
DB have you done away with the half casualties ???
The fire table needs to simplified to soemthing that can be remebered and not looked up evertime a unit fires. You'd get the same results in a fraction of the time.

VB and I just played a game using the finalised and proposed new rules.
A few questions arose:
1. What happens to a general if the unit he is attached to routs/retreats?
2. If a general is attached to unit A but nearby unit B is subjected to a double six, does the general still remain at risk?
3. If a general is not attached to a unit, does he still exert a +1 if it is taking a persuit test?
4. As some actions are taken to be simultaneous, what happens if a general is leading a charge and is killed by incoming fire? Does the +1 still stand as the charge started with said general alive?
5. If attached to a unit, can the general influence a brigade morale roll?
Overall, the new rules relating to generals was good for gameplay. We did tend to attach them more than may have been historically accurate. Perhaps a generals ability to receive/give orders should be reduced if he is attached, or run a higher risk of being killed?

On the whole it seems a sensible way to work things out but I have a few questions Dave and have started a new thread showing what happened
For the record I got 2 out of 3 massed columns to charge home only to throw miserable dice in the ensuing melee and get bundled back down the hill I crawled up  , but I'm not sure that we played the melee correctly though - but that's a question for the other thread

CC,
1. What happens to a general if the unit he is attached to routs/retreats?
Once attached he stays with the unit but may leave during the movement phase.
2. If a general is attached to unit A but nearby unit B is subjected to a double six, does the general still remain at risk?
Only if he is the nearest general within radius.
3. If a general is not attached to a unit, does he still exert a +1 if it is taking a persuit test?
No - now the pursuit test modifier requires the general to be in B2B contact.
4. As some actions are taken to be simultaneous, what happens if a general is leading a charge and is killed by incoming fire? Does the +1 still stand as the charge started with said general alive?
No.
5. If attached to a unit, can the general influence a brigade morale roll?
Yes.

Just been thinking (I do this some times, although in a random fashion), are there any particular disadvantages in having a commander attached? In our last game we continually attached commanders to units that were charging. Approx 50% of charges were made with an attached general. Up to this point I have no problems. But surely, being attached means the generals attention is very focussed on the unit he is with. Are there any penalties on receiving new orders or trying to change orders?
I think the double 6 risk to general is generally too high, but when a general is attached perhaps the risk should rise.
