Russian ISU & SU152 - 'low velocity' guns ?
I think that classifying the 152mm ML-20 as a 'low velocity' weapon is a bit harsh. It had a muzzle velocity of about 670m/s, which is similar to that of the 76mm ZIS 3 gun, which was regularly used in an anti-tank role. Was this done for any paricular reason? Steve

S, Yes – it is intentionally harsh!! First the weapon is a gun-howitzer and therefore not quite of the same capability as genuine AT guns, etc. Without going into the myriad of gun velocities, the 152 was at the lower end, I think even the early 76 on the T34 had slightly better, though muzzle velocity depends on the round type as well. Also I did read somewhere that its direct fire sights were only equipped to 700 meters or something similar. It also goes someway to represent the very slow loading of this gun, not only does it have a two piece charge but it’s also weighs an awful lot -being handled by just one poor loader! Finally one needs to take into account the very limited number of AP rounds actually carried. However if you feel this over-penalises the good ole 152's then I suggest allowing 152's a single shot of AP at the longer range, which of course the player must first state he is firing! DB
