Virgina Rifles
Hello Folks! Here is my latest addition to my growing Guilford Courthouse american force for BG AWI.I wanted to keep it all on the same thread, but I cannot edit the heading to notify new additions. This is the Virgina Rifles.I continued on with the "wet"conditions, but added more detail to the bases, because I have more room and the subject at hand asks for it! :D I added some american indian flavour to some of the belts, haversacks and bands as they were noted for doing this(riflemen in particular). These are perhaps my favorite mini's of the Perry's AWI range.I hope I managed to do some measure of justice to the Perry's fantastic sculpts. :) Virgina Rifles(riflemen) The first part of this thread is here: http://generaldebrigade.greatboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=3341

Absolutely fascinating little vignettes Axebreaker. Beautifully conceived and painted. If i had to find a fault i'd say the sisal string grass is looking a bit out of place. It's too regular in length and the raw colour stands out like a sore thumb. Methinks if you mix some very runny paint in two or three greenish tones and you apply onto the grass then they should blend in better and make things more harmonious. Hope you don't mind my comments Axe but i love to hear constructive criticism myself - none of us are perfect and thus 'tis always interesting to hear others' comments - whether we agree and heed them of course is another matter!

Ty!I appreciate the comments. :) On the sisal grass I left it this raw because I like how it adds contrast to the base.Painting it green will give an impression of swamp, and that is not the direction I wanted to go.I was looking at trying to give picture of a forest floor after a recent heavy downpoor. The regular cut is something I need to examine.Perhaps round it a bit.

These are gorgeous, Not a period I have ever had interest in but your figures and basing are something special. I do agree with the thinking on the taller grass making it less regular but all the same outstanding. Your games must look excellent and be fun to take part in with all these lovely figures roaming around. Very inspiring stuff! thanks for sharing Makes me want to spend more time on my basing. cheers Paul P Scotland

@BK Although,I plan on trying a shade of green on some other tall grass and see how it looks.Thank you for the tip. :) @paulalba I'm glad you liked them! :D I'll take your two's suggestion and try and make the tall grass less regular, thanks for the input. :) I'm hope are board will look nice, because we haven't played a game yet with this system, but we plan to this summer. In the time between I plan on doing some play testing with other mini's as subs. just to learn the game.

The last paragraph should read: "I hope our board looks nice...."

These are absolutely stunning. Faultless execution all round! :)

Axebreaker- 05-03-2009

Ty,your very kind. :D I would also like to tell you that your Blog on the AWI had a large influence on me in getting involved in this period. You have inspired me into starting a blog of my own soon on my interpretation of modeling and painting AWI.I probably won't have all the excellent research you add to each beautifully painted unit, but I'll give it a go. :D

Nice work AB! An assortment of hair colour is a simple but very effective way to add a 'mixed' feel to a unit, well done there, and VERY muddy ground it has definately rained recently... More Please! GJ

Axebreaker- 05-12-2009

Ty very much!I think on reflection,I might use a bit less water next time. What do you think? :)

Gentleman Johnny- 05-12-2009

On reflection? :) Maybe pooling the water away from the edges will make them look less insular... But, it just looks as if there has been a very recent thunder storm. GJ

On reflection? Ooops, didn't even notice that.Pun was unintended. Maybe pooling the water away from the edges will make them look less insular... But, it just looks as if there has been a very recent thunder storm. GJ I'm pleased to hear that,as that was my intent. :)

1) Figures VERY nicely painted, good group composition on each base, just how I imagine riflemen would have looked. 2) Bases are exceptional - not just for the water effect, but also because they fly completely in the face of the conventional wisdom that the base should be lighter than the figures, and still more so the smaller the size of the figures (ie 25mm, 15mm, 10mm, 5mm and so on), and it works. It may be that the extra light reflected by the glossy surface compensates in some way? I'm not sure it would work for blue-coated troops, but it certainly does for these guys. 3) The prone loading figure may well be needing an urgent appointment with his proctologist.........
