I recall reading somewhere that there was one type of linen (IIRC it was Osnaburg/Osnabrug) that could only be successfully dyed blue, and that even that colour invariably ran or faded, and this was the origin of the "purple" hunting shirt. Maryland State Marines also had that colour, I think, so it may have been a local trademark, or a cheapo "seconds" batch purchased by the Maryland clothing committee.
I've decided to return to the bossom of the AWI for a few weeks and have 4 British line regiments planned. The recent thread on backpacks is directly responsible 8)
I'd like to do those purple guys at some stage, perhaps as part of unit where each base has hunting shirts of a slightly different hue.
After about an 18 month period when I didnt lift a brush I,m starting out by finishing the 4th of 4 Front Rank Old guard battalions.
Then its AB Austrians for the Wagram game at the end of October-
