Xavier della Gatta
Does anyone know if there us a web site or a book that has Della Gatta's AWI illustrations reproduced in them? The only examples I have seen tend to be rather small and sometimes in Black & White. As I understand it they are some of the most accurate contemorary records of the uniforms worn at the time and it would be useful to be able to refer to them. Does anyone know if they are on display in any galleries?

Are you interested in a particular painting?

Not really, I have simply come across a number of references to them such the picture of Pauli Vol1 of "The Philadelphia Campaign" by McGuire which apparently shows Furguson's riflemen (I think its the only depiction of them). The reproductions are too small to see much of the detail which would be a useful source of inspiration for painting the various units.

I'm not sure where or how you would access a copy of this, but here is an article specifically on the paintings (I'm not sure if there ever was a Part 2 though!):- Stephen R. Gilbert. “An analysis of the Xavier della Gatta Paintings of the Battles of Paoli and Germantown, 1777: Part I.” Military Collector and Historian, no. 3 (Fall 1994). p. 98-108. It used to be possible to contact the author on this website, which is a mine of info and the members are very helpful if you have specific queries on these paintings:- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Revlist/
