I managed to get some guys at the club to give the rules a go
Here are some pictures from the battle , it was just a stand up fight with about 1000 points a side.
Pretty open ground in the centre with the hill the main objective, , the bridge and the two farms the other objectives.
You see lots of fences to the top of this picture , the fences slowed the union advance up there , until I remebered that we could deploy in full skirmish order and get moving , but alas too late
The battle lines about to hit.
All was going well , until the Zouaves routed...
This caused a brigade morale check , and the union right flank retired.
Dam those fences look high ..
Over all a good fun battle and a clear victory to the Rebs.
Looking forward to the next game. |

A quality game. Good stuff. Try some of the scenarios from Heartland. More stimulating than a points bash.
BTW You did the right thing with the fences slowing the Feds. Going into skirmish order entire just to make life easier when crossing obstacles is just a bit out. Can you image Pickett's entire division going into skirmish order as they crossed the fences on Emmitsburg Pike? |

Thanks for the comments.
I wouldn't suggest going into skirmish order while under fire or threat from being charged , the Union brigades on the left flank were not under fire , and were a long way from getting into the fight, there was friendly Cav out in front of them , so it seemed like a good idea to break out into skirmish order , get across the fences , then reform for some action ?
If we had more time we could have plodded forward, but the game was squeezed into an evening with 5 people new to the rules, so we had limited time.
By the end of the game the union left flank was secure , but they had lost their right flank and the middle. They just didn't have enough time to bring their reserves up into the fight , mainly due to the slow movement across the multiple fences.
But it was only our first game , if we'd known how much the fences would slow down units , we would have deployed differently etc. |

Hi All
I was at Gettysberg last year and watched the reenactors recreate Pickett's charge (amble). The fence across the road gave them hell. Ever tried to climb a fence carrying a musket? Iwas unformed, and I was just watching!!!
God, those reenactors did'nt like Old Peter Longstreet - and he did'nt want them to go!!!
