Hi - I wonder if anyone can clear up some confusion we had in our game tonight. We were re-fighting Logans Cross Roads from the 1st Scenario book and the game was fought with 15mm figures. An unsupported Confederate 2 gun battery battery deployed within 10cm of a 16 figure dismounted Union cavalry unit. As it was dismounted cavalry it was automatically deployed in extended line and also happened to be behind a rail fence. The Union unit declared a charge the next turn and despite the Confederate firing canister the damage inflicted was not sufficient to prevent the charge from going in !

I could not find anything in the rules that would prevent dismounted cavalry from chargeing, but its quite possible I have missed something.As the umpire I was confused as to whether this should be allowed or not. Can anyone who has a better working knowledge of the rules let me know their view of what should have happened ?

Nothing wrong with dismounted cavalry charging, and serves the gunners right for unlimbering too close.

Apart from at 1st Mannassas where the Feds unlimbered a couple of batteries at close range to Jackson's line, such tactics were rare. Pelham's antics at Fredricksburg where worthy of comment in unmilmbering close to the Federal flank.

Such aggressive use of artilllery was born out of the American experience in the Mex-American war but gunners soon learned this was not on when fighting their brother Americans.
