Rule 5.7 Engage, p. 21 states that "The brigade must advance ...". Is "advance" defined as in Rule 5.6 Assault, i.e. "advance for at least their half move" or is it possible for the brigade to pause; to reform for example? Or does it all depend on the order as written down or stated? How do you handle this in your games?

Many Thanks
Olaf

Hi Olaf,

You would not be able to halt the brigade to reform that would require a change of orders to hold and then reverting back to engage orders. Individual battalions might halt to reform as long as half the brigade continues towards it objective.

Thanks for all your questions, there are quite a few things in the rules that need tightened up and there are a few clarifications needed. I hope you enjoy the game none the less for this and please let us know of any more.

All the best,

Dougie

Hi Dougie,

thanks a lot for the precise answers to all my posts (and for some neat scenario specific rules suggestions, too!). I do enjoy the game. This ruleset, i think, does convey a fair amount of period knowledge as well as a lot of gaming experience. And, you may have guessed it, I do have some more questions. Here's the first one:

Regarding this topic, does "as long as half the brigade continues towards it objective" mean they have to move at least half their move or is it enough to execute only some kind of movement, however minimal, as long as half the brigade does move in some way? (Assuming there are two brigades who want to coordinate their advance, one brigade not wanting to outrun the other)

Thanks
Olaf

Hi Olaf,

The brigade would have to move half of its units, half of their move towards the objective. The onus would be on the brigade that was becoming disordered to keep up with the good ordered brigade not the other way round.

The player seeing his attack breaking up could intervene and try to halt both brigades and sort them out but this is never easy under fire.

The other way would be to have one lead brigade on engage or assault orders and the second one to be on support orders. This would allow the brigades to move in consort and upon reaching close range you could then change the second brigades orders to suit the situation.

I hope this helps,
Dougie
