I need to purchase Washington's and Lee's horse and sadly the Perry twins haven't made any yet.They have some excellent British horse and I was wondering if it would be to much of a strech to convert them to Washington's and Lee's horse.I could go with Foundry,but they are smaller and well I really want Perry......
Any opinions and ideas are welcome.  |

1) Are you aware that Alan Perry also designed the Foundry AWI range? I've found that, whilst you can tell the two ranges apart if you study one of each side-by-side in their "raw" state, once painted and based they don't stand out.
2) You can use the British Legion cavalry for Lee's Legion horse. I'm pretty sure Perry will do some more American cavalry eventually, but they do seem to be pre-occupied with plastic Naps at the moment.  If you need a "quick fix" Old Glory do a pack of infantry in Tarleton helmets and (I think) waistcoats, which would do for Lee's Legion foot.

Yes indeed,I was aware the Perry's did the AWI range.  Like all things even they have improved(although the Foundry are still top shelf work).If you check out the Gallery,you will see I mixed both Foundry and Perry together for my militia.So,I agree totaly that they can mix together without that much difference.
My maine issue was the size of horses in that I would prefer a larger Perry horse to a Foundry one and I like the newer range a little bit more.

I was hoping you would say that.I didn't want it looking out of place. All the excuse I need:D

Yep,it seems they are.With some luck,they will get reaquainted with AWI soon.

No,I do not like Old Glory at 25/28mm,but they have a nice 15mm range in which their 15mm ACW is very good,but their 25/28mm is not up to par in my opinion.

Word is that Old Glory is re-doing their 28mm AWI line. Their old stuff was pretty bad. I have not seen the new stuff, but I hear it is much nicer. And you will be able to buy them painted. I have a buddy that has been buying their ACW pre-pained stuff and he says they are very-very good.
I hope to see some this summer at Historicon.

First off I'll say I respect anyone's opinion on pre-painted mini's and I will futher say it's your right to collect pre-painted mini's as you see fit.
As for myself,I would never go down that road  as I feel that painting your own stuff is 70% of the hobby,at least for myself that is.
But,like I said everyone is free to interpret the hobby as they wish. |

I haven't seen the pre-painted stuff, but if the ACW line is anything to go by, the unpainted OG 2nd Edition ranges are an enormous improvement - and even more so over their AWI 25mm stuff, which was awful, especially the cavalry which were a right wossname to actually fit onto any of the horses (ironically, the "jogging" pose of the infantry was ideal for the British in this conflict). I am actually considering getting some of them to provide command alternatives and extra rank-and-file poses.

........... I tend to agree. I enjoy painting as much as playing. But, there are now a lot of low cost, good, painting resources available. Adding a well painted unit here and there is a great way to get that scenario finished ... or that unit of highlanders; 'cuz painting kilts causes migranes in normal human beings.

I understand your point,but I'm a detail painter and like to challenge myself.Although,getting highlanders just right would be quite a task. 
I guess I'm also a purist in that if I didn't paint it,then I do not field it.I have exceptions when "borrowing" other friends mini's in that I'm not trying to represent them as my own.
Buying other folks painted mini's just goes against my grain too much and is for me largely defeating the purpose of modeling and wargaming.
It's a issue of pride for me as well I guess.Please understand I am only speaking for myself and I am in no way trying to suggest anything otherwise.In other words,everyone is different and I both accept and respect that. |
