Hi guys,
I am so new to GdB my rulebook has not arrived yet (Although it is on the way).
What size table do you need to play GdB. Will a 6'x4' or 8'x4' be enough to play a normal game?
I understand big battles like Waterloo etc need a huge table but for me my limit is playing games that last no longer than 3-4 hours with the occasional 5-7 hour game once ot twice a year.
I have picked up some new Victrix and Perry plastics and I really do not want to drop down to 15mm scale as I paint enough of those for Flames of War.
Happy Gaming,
Allan |

Hi Allan,
Firstly, welcom to the great wargaming world of General De Brigade. You will love the gaming system and the battles.
It really does depend on what you want. At our club when we are wanting to play through certain aspects of the rules we will often get out a 6 x 4 foot table and play a brigade a side with some attachments such as a sqaudron of cavalry, battery of guns etc as has been stated by quite few of the lads on some similar topics going around the forum at present.
We generally try a deeper 6 x 6 table if we want to try playing through the rules with almost exclusively mounted actions - once again smaller is better when learning the rules etc. Once confident of a particular aspect, introduce more variety in terms of unit types etc. We are doing exactly this at present with "There are your Guns" for FPW at the NWS here.
Depending on the size of battle you wish to play the only limit to gaming table size is what you have available in terms of room etc.
Hope your initial games all go well.
Cheers
Carlo
PS - We will be playing a GdB 1815 game on an 18 x 6 foot table at our clubs annual gaming convention "Gauntlet" this weeknd. Hope to take a few photographs. |

Hi Carlo,
Thanks for the quick reply.
It's a relief to know I have a table that suits. After seeing some of the pictures going around I was beginning to doubt going 28 mm
What scale are you using at your club?
I have seen nice 15 to 20 mm going around on the forums.
I was thinking maybe I need to do 15mm scale to save money and play beyond Brigade Engagements on the 6'x4' table I have.
The Perry and Victrix plastics are within my budget though and Victrix has more promising plastic kits coming out from Highlanders, cavalry and Artillery.
I have literally just finished assembling my 1st Perry British box set as penninsular war.
I have 1 Victrix Flanking Company and one Victrix Center Company box (both Waterloo sets) set to go as well as 1x Perry French box to go.
I was thinking of getting the Victrix Light Infantry Heads for the Flank Company set (45 heads and 6 arms inlc bugle).
I want to get a British and French Brigade up & running asap.
I don't know which metal commanders to get for each Regiment/Brigade?
I have been told there were no grenadiers regiments at Waterloo which leaves me with light Infantry for the Flank Company set.....
I wish my rulebook would hurry up and arrive
Cheers,
Allan |

Hi Allan,
We use 28mm for GdB at our club and for us it is the perfect scale. In terms of ideas for Orders of Battle you should try the General De Brigade site which has some excellent resources for Waterloo availble as Word document downloads as well as the excellent GdB Scenario books available through various outlets.
In terms of commanders look at the Perry Website after you have chosen your preferred Brigade as you will see that those masters of metal have quite a few of the actually Brigade and Divisional commanders already cast as well as Corp commanders etc. Quite a few people, m included, love the Perry Plastics and use metal command figures etc to create greater varity in the battalions etc.
Cheers
Carlo

Hi Carlo,
Thanks. I will try perry for the command figures.
I live in Toowoomba, Queensland which is around 1-2 hours west of Brisbane.
I actually spoke with the LGS owner today and all the Napoleonic stock has sold out and a few guys have ordered more. Really encouraging news for me in terms of local players.
I have been doing alot of searching lately to find out more about the regiments that belong to the flags that are supplied in the Perry & Victrix boxes. Some have a great record of service some terrible.
I need a brigade (or Division - I am getting cocky here - so many models ) that has:
Highlander regiments (for the new Victrix plastics)
British Light Infantry Battalion using the Victrix Head Conversions - VXP0008 British Light Battalion Heads and Arms
or perhaps the new Perry Rifle Skirmishers?
other British Infantry
British Cavalry
British Artillery.
A Grenadier Battalion (Penninsular War perhaps?) for assaults on fortified positions.
Enough of me waffling. I haven't even started on the French yet
Cheers,
Allan |

If you mean historical:
Kempt's brigade at Quatre Bras and Waterloo had the 79th highlanders and 95th Rifles.
So if you expand to the whole of Picton's division you would also have th 42nd Black Watch, and the 92nd Highlanders.
This is the division I used to command while I played with my dad as kid back in the 80's. |

Hi Blue Max,
Thanks for the heads up. That is a very big help to me. I will copy it down on my Napoleonic Word documents I am accumulating slowly. Mostly just hobby tips but it does help point me in the right direction.
Any ideas for Penninsular War Brigades with Highlanders, Light Rifles etc..
I admire Picton. Picton did some very hard yards leading up to Waterloo. He gets seriously wounded at Quatre Bras and still makes sure he is leading his division for the party held at Waterloo where he is killed.
