3rd French hussars, all the brading/knots on the jackets, was it white for the troopers and silver for the officers?
I am painting this unit now, and from all the pictures I have it looks like that but I just can not be sure.

Darek,
Lace, braiding and knots are red for troopers and silver for officers. Unlike other hussar uniforms, the 3rd regiment had black belts.

Thanks a lot for the info, had no idea belts being black either.

One last site.
http://www.figuras.miniatures.de/italeri-6008-france-hussards.html
This gives details on barrel sash and the bag on the colpacks.
Found this while trying to sort out the braiding colours for the 8th hussars. In the Knotel prints it is red/black, although the note states that the origional colour was white but changed to further differentiate the unit from the 7th hussars.
I cannot find any other reference to the red/black braid, nor when this change occurred.

A timely post! I have just embarked upon a few husars, the third in particular!
White bags on the colpack sounds unusual, but there you have it!
Does anyone have a view or reference for the trumpeter plumes? _________________ Cheers,

Hmmm, just looked at the Knotel print in Elting's "Napoleonic Uniforms". Here the bag is grey and lined with red. No trumpeter depicted, but the Chef de Musique has a white pom pom (presumably because he is part of the regimental staff) and a black plume. This exalted individual has an all red uniform with white braid.
Don't know if this really helps.

Hi Ants (did you ever know a bloke who ran under the pseudonym Sprunglin perchance?),
I got the red uniform with grey braid from one of the links you provided. I have seen another plate which has the breeches as grey instead for the trumpeter, with a black plume, but the shako in grey.
I have been running with black plumes for hussars typically, save the elite company - but have not spotted any other detail for trumpeters, particularly elite company trumpeters as yet. _________________ Cheers,

On the second plate I mentioned above, the belts on the 3rd Hussars are depicted as white, not black. I spotted the plates on the internet when I googled 3rd Hussars - which I concede is not necessarily robust as a reference. I'm indifferent between the two sources, so am prepared to be convinced either way. _________________ Cheers,

B,
Never heard of Spruglin.
Interesting that there is so much conflicting information on the uniforms.

Ants,
Indeed. In fact both may be right!
Thanks for your advice with this. Helpful, as always. Are you building any particular OOB? _________________ Cheers,

B,
I am trying to do the impossible, build an OOB for two gaming systems, GdB for brigade/divisional sized games, Age of Eagles for Corps and army games.
The basing systems are very different, but as I will play GdB more than AoE I will base for the former and adapt for the latter.
Mainly building a 3rd Corps division for the 1809 campaign. Hussars will be the 5th, 7th. I will add a few dragoons and Vistula lancers to give me some Peninsular options as well.
For AoE I will also need a smattering of Confederation troop and Guard etc. Eventually, when time and money allows, I will increase the numbers of these to allow me to use them in GdB.

You might try this site which I have found to be extremely useful and beautifully presented. It is only in French but very easy to navigate.

Beresford, which 'era' ar you seeking information for, with regards to the 3rd Hussars? I own the 3-volume Histoire & Collections studies by Jean-Marie Mongin & André Jouineau, covering French Hussars 1786-1815, and would be happy to do a look-up for you. _________________ Bryce Allen |

Bryce,
how very generous of you! I am building a brigade based upon Amiel's 15th Light cavalry brigade from the 1813 Autumn campaign. Nafziger tells me that there were about 3 squadrons of the 3rd present in the brigade in August. A pretty little force for those captivated by variety in uniforms: squadrons from the 2nd Hussars (brown pelisse over sky blue overalls); 3rd Hussars (under discussion); 4th Hussars (red pelisse over blue overalls) and the 12th hussars (sky blue pelisse over sky blue overalls - red dolman if visible). I am using AB figures form the Imperial French range.
Ants, you're a braver man than I. I've enough trying to get a game using one set of rules consistently (although admitedly I do generate a number of the house rules we use) to be able to have a go at a second set! Although AoE dos read well. Good luck! _________________ Cheers,
