PLayed a small practice game on Saturday evening and a couple of questions came up ... Just wanting to make sure we did these correctly.
1. A British Regiment in open order advanced upon a line of Continental infantry with artillery support. After a couple of turns of casualties the now stationary British had to take a morale test for 10% casualties that turn. They had 3 DP but had the Brigade Commander attached to the unit. They failed the test and recieved a "Retreat" result.
When does the unit retreat? We assumed it would be in the Compulsory Move segment of the next "turn." But the British Regiment (rated line) had been stationary all turn, did not engage in melee. Could the regiment rally off a DP prior to retreating next turn? And could the Brigade Commander rally off a DP in that turn?
2. Movement of Generals. The chart states that a General rolls 4 AvD for movement. Is this the maximum distance the General can move that turn? He does not have to move the whole distance rolled for like other units do, does he? We assumed that the AvD rolls were only for the maximum that he could move that turn.
As for the game: The British Elite Brigade of Light Infantry and Grenadiers routed an American Milita Brigade and turned the American line that had been giving a drubbing to the two other British Brigades. So historic ... those darned Militia costing the Continental regulars another battle!
Loved every minute of the game, and found it to be very historic in outcome. One of the very best miniature games I have ever played and I have played a lot.

Hello Mike
Starting with the generals; they don't need to move the full AvDx4 roll, they just can't go further than that. This avoids the need for 'gamesy' players to ride round in a circle three times!
The roll will produce a minimum of 8inches which is frequently more than enough... We still roll anyway just to 'waste' the big numbers that inevitably come when you are only intending to move three inches!
They way I've dealt with the Retreat previously is:
Retreat caused by Melee:
1st movement is immediate, 2nd movement waits for the compulsory phase of the next game turn. (If they are still there! Follow-up chargers can still contact them and cause dispersal before they get that far...)
Retreat caused in Morale Phase:
1st movement is in the next compulsory phase.
I've played it so that the DP's can be rallied off, but this does not affect the Retreat result which still happens regardless. The rally can only occur in the following game turn.
But I'm interested to see if this was a correct reading!
