A French column (36) charges the front end of a line (most extreme case would be only the edges of both units touch). How many figures can fire here? Is it just those FIGURES within the firing arch? Is it just those Stands within the firing arch? Or can the whole unit (all 32 figures) fire because one figure is within the firing arch?
I think it should be figures or stands. I don't like the idea that the entire unit can fire because this doesn't reward tactics/deployment as much as I like. Would be interested in how others play.

| To be clear, I have assumed the line comprises 32 figures. |

We play it that only the stands that bear may fire, and do not subdivide to 'figure level', for simplicity. The 'whole line' of 32 figures may not fire, unless each stand has some portion of the enemy column in its 'field of fire'. _________________ Bryce Allen |

I'd go with figures. Stands might cause confusion because of different basing standards. For example, some of my Russian infantry is based in fours (the elite platoons) while the center platoons are based in eights. And a player with his French based in sixes might find my being able to drag another couple of figures into the combat, just due to the basing, to be unfair.

Stands within arc of fire. You must remember that the line can move up to half the distance the column moves ( to it's halfway point) as a charge reaction, and it can still fire at full effect, so that might make the difference between 2 stands firing and 3 (or more). That might teach the pesky Frogs for trying to be clever and manouvre |
