An excellent battle for wargamers fought in October 1776, with few troops on each side - the US under Washington had about 1,700 with the British under Howe had about 4,500.
From what I remember the continentials were on a hill in trenches and would have held the field if their militia friends had not fled the field and exposed their flank.
"The Revolutionary War and the Military Policy of the United States", Green, Francis Vinton (1911).
"General Washington", Lengel, New York (2005)

Yes an interesting engagement.
I really have the way that Americans accounts can never admit to be beaten.
Bunkerhill ... run out of ammo etc. |

I can identify with the 'never admit to having been beaten' stance by our US cousins.
Last year in Gettysberg at the reenactment a member of a North Carolina Brigade told me in all seriousness the "we have not surrendered you know - we are just regrouping!"

haha.
Do you know anything about the orbat, from the accounts that I have read the whole thing is abit confusing.
I read that the Militia were defending the river line, with the delaware's on the hill. Then Militia fell back to the hill and extra support was ordered i.e. more continentals.
Was trying to get hold of the BG scenario book but couldn't find it on the Caliver book site. |
