I'm still trying to figre that one out too. In my experience gun batteries are pretty safe from frontal attacks, but not always. Single models are vulnerable, aas they lack the oomph to stop a unit of charging horse.
Well, if the canister doesn't stop the chargers, then the best you can do is have a unit of foot in reserve, and counter-charge the following turn. Of course, my Russian gunners never run, and if they don't do the job through canister, they're expected to die to a man...
