Is there any contingency in the rules for a unit to fire direct H.E? Or do they have to use the indirect fire template and dice for accuracy. If this is the case it seems slightly unrealistic for example to have a 'priest' (105mm SPG) firing direct at a building from short range (under 12 inches - 20mm ranges) and then having to apply the template and finding it has missed by 8 inches. This scenario could have cropped up in the game recently played.

Simon,

No, any direct fire from artillery (except mortars/nebelwerfers, etc) simply uses the direct fire tables and applies the appropriate ammo type.
(If a arty battery decides to use direct fire the component guns must fire as individual units and not as one battery.)

So if its a Priest, use the direct fire tables as normal and apply the 105mm-139mm HE factor of +4.

Only mortars, etc., even if they have a direct line of sight, use the arty accuracy tables, as they are not capable of anything other than indirect (or lobbed) fire.
(Ok, I know one of the Brit medium mortars could be fired direct!)

Chapters 10 and 11 only deal with indirect fire.

I would assume them that a player is only able to fire at one unit within the building. As it was, there were three units within the building. Does that mean in the rules I would have to target just one of the units without any chance of affecting other units within the same building. Seems fairly unrealistic to me, if a 105mm is hitting a building at short range, it is just as likely to affect any or all of the units inside (as in using a template), rather than artificially having to single out an individual unit and having no effect on the others.

Simon,

Remember your Priest is not firing at a single building, its firing at a group of buildings represented by a single model building, so firing at, and only affecting an individual target is justifiable.

Thanks for your clarification once again. We feel the rules have a great feel to them and thanks for your time and willingness to explain the finer points.
